Gibson Pharmacy

Medicine Galleries, Science Museum
November 2019

Set within the Science Museum's impressive Medicine galleries, Gibson's Pharmacy is an immersive digital experience, located in a partially reconstructed historic pharmacy. The pharmacy was originally established in Hexham in 1834 and procured by the Science Museum when the shop closed down in 1978.

Using custom interfaces, spatialised audio and projection-mapped animations, the experience recreates the atmosphere of a small family-run pharmacy at the turn of the 20th century.

Upon entering the space, visitors trigger one of a set of audio narratives that explore important pharmaceutical themes of the era. Visitors can also interrogate three separate physical objects using intuitive touch interfaces, with projections lighting up relevant parts of the objects and showing animations explaining how they were used.
